Kuraburi

Kuraburi is in the north of Phang-Nga Province, adjacent to the island of Koh Ra and near the border of Ranong Province (one of the gateways to Myanmar). It is an inland destination with a big lake surrounded by rolling verdant hills. Kuraburi is in a beautiful rural setting surrounded by villages. A visit here offers a glimpse into traditional Thai life.

One of the advantages of Kuraburi is that it is a great base from which to explore the Surin Islands archepelago which has a rich diversity of marine life to enjoy by either snorkeling or diving. At Bon Lek Bay on Koh Surin Tai there is a small village of Sea Gypsies. It is possible to watch their sacrifice to the spirits ceremony every full moon.

Kuraburi is also near the large island of Koh Phra Thong. It is a little known gem in Thailand with mangrove forests, golden sandy beaches and many rare flora and fauna including a nearly extinct orchid species and tortoises.

Another possible excursion is to the nearby Klong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary where it is possible to see elephant, gaur, tapir, serow, sambar, clouded leopard, sun bear, Great Argus, and king cobra.

Kuraburi is also a great area to go trekking, rock climbing, kayaking and mountain biking. There is only one place to stay in Kuraburi. That is the Kuraburi Greenview Resort. It is an environmentally friendly resort that uses cobblestone walls to impove insulation in the accommodation. It is an isolated spot that has somewhat of a 'safari' feel. There aren't any restaurants or shops in the vacinity of the resort, only the Phuket to Ranong bus stop.

Kuraburi is 180 kms north of Phuket. From Phuket airport it takes about 2.5 hours to reach Kuraburi. It is 120 kms south of Ranong City (1.5 hours). Kuraburi is on Route 4, the coastal road that goes all the way down to Phuket.
