Getting Around Khao Lak

Songthaew & Bus

Songthaews are trucks with seating in the back. They have fixed routes, and should have fixed prices. However, it is good to ask the price before you get in the back. Songthaews can flagged down from the main road. The fare is fixed whether your journey is short or long. The average fare is 20 THB. Songthaews are a popular way to make short journeys in the Khao Lak area. They are not that frequent.

A bus from Takuapa (in the north) to Khao Lak center costs 30 THB and takes 45 minutes. From Phuket center there is a bus to Khao Lak / Bang La Onthat costs 60 THB and takes 2 hours.

Motorbike Taxi

Hiring Motorbikes and Cars

Hiring a car or motobike is a great way to explore the Khao Lak region and beyond. Off route 4 there are a number of smaller scenic roads with stunning scenery. You can often rent a motorbike using a copy of your passport so you are not held to ransom for a large sum of money if you scratch the bike. Although the roads are good in Khao Lak some of the driving is bad. You should have an International Driver's License (IDL) to rent a bike and bar but few people will ask to see it. If you don't have an IDL any insurance you have will be invalidated. Few places give you real insurance for driving a motobike, but it is possible (and recommended) that you get insurance for driving a car.

Motorbike / moped hire: 150 - 250 Thai Baht a day
